{"id":314,"date":"2014-10-14T19:11:54","date_gmt":"2014-10-14T19:11:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wa4fat.com\/?p=314"},"modified":"2014-10-15T02:21:46","modified_gmt":"2014-10-15T02:21:46","slug":"the-helena-alabama-hamfest-and-something-you-dont-hear-every-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wa4fat.com\/?p=314","title":{"rendered":"The Helena, Alabama Hamfest, and something you don&#8217;t hear every day."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This past weekend brought the fourth running of the<a title=\"Helena Hamfest\" href=\"http:\/\/w4shl.com\/hamfest\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Helena, Alabama Hamfest<\/a>, held not far from\u00a0the Birmingham metro area. It was my first opportunity to visit, and the abundant accolades I&#8217;d heard were\u00a0understated.<\/p>\n<p>The large outdoor event was held a midst glorious sunshine and mild temperatures in the heavily wooded Helena Amphitheater, located in the center of one of Alabama&#8217;s most picturesque little towns. With thundering\u00a0train tracks to the east and west, and the bucolic Buck Creek flowing swiftly alongside, the venue was inviting. And come they did too, as a large gathering of vendors exhibited their flotsam and jetsam. Preceding any\u00a0announcement, Shelby County Amateur Radio Club President Eugene &#8220;Geno&#8221; Newman, N4GNO, \u00a0 brandished his bugle and lit into a rendition of <em>Call To Post<\/em>. I half expected to see a troop of Thoroughbreds and a tray of Mint Juleps each time those familiar notes echoed throughout the park. An Amateur Radio station was on the air, working the <a title=\"SKCC\" href=\"http:\/\/skccgroup.com\" target=\"_blank\">Straight Key Century Club<\/a>\u00a0Weekend Sprint event, and showcasing the vitality of our hobby.
